If you are the new kid in school, it is always hard to meet new friends.
That is probably one of the toughest challenges facing a kid who is new
at school. And you know you can't just go up to everyone you think can
be a friend and ask her name.
A good way to meet new friends is to go to parties, but a party is a
challenge in itself. Not knowing anyone there will definitely make you
feel nervous and awkward. But understand that this is an excellent
opportunity to introduce yourself to a new group of people and meet
potential new friends.
So you sit by the punch bowl but no one comes up to you...you feel
awkward and alone. You know that you are smart, witty and a great
conversationalist. So what's wrong? You have to consider what your body
language is saying to people. If you have your forehead in a knot, then
people might think that you don't want to be bothered and they will not
come up to you. Remember to open up. Never fold your hands in front of
yourself - this only says that you don't want to be talked to or
bothered. You want to do the opposite; you want people to talk to you.
When talking, angle yourself toward the person you are talking to and
show that you are interested in what they are saying.
Make sure you are looking people in the eye when you talk. Never be
afraid of making eye contact with people. Most of the time this will be
the trigger for you or the person to come up and talk. If you bury your
head in a book or look down on the floor, this just says that you don't
want to be disturbed. This is well and good when you are walking or
commuting, but not at a party. Just remember never to offend someone
while looking at her; look at her gently and with a look of genuine
interest.
Smiling may not be a big deal to you, but when you display a warm, fun
smile people will be at ease around you and they are more likely to want
to talk to you more and have fun with you. Smile at someone if you make
eye contact and be sure to smile periodically during any small talk.
If people still won't come to you, then go to them. Nothing makes you
look more outgoing and approachable than actively seeking out people and
talking to them. The more you wait, the more likely you will feel
uncomfortable and the more unapproachable you will seem to be.
The most important tip: always try to have fun. Body language
communicates a lot about you without you even noticing it, and body
language communicates deep emotions all the time. The moment you display
negative body language you won't even notice it - but others will. Just
have fun at the party and be comfortable in social interaction
settings. The more confident you become, the more you feel and look
approachable.
